Design Philosophy and Media Grid Operation Principles

ISTP is designed as open standard for high bandwidth streaming end-to-end across the Internet. As a viable approach for enhancing high-bandwidth streaming capabilities, it must be consistent with the end-to-end principle of the Internet. In addition, Media Grid elements which route and forward inter-streams throughout the grid must behave in the same manner as the outlined in that principle. Most features in lowest level of the communication systems inflict costs on the higher layer clients. Smart end-points and a relatively "dumb" network must be the design goals of any system wishing to succesfully grow organically within the Internet. Therefore, stateless mediation models have been adopted for both the forwarding and bandwidth management facilities within ISTP and its lower transport layer, TCP.

In addition, ISTP adheres to the following principles:

  • Secure, interoperable with IPv4 and IPv6
  • Optimizes for Media Grid "diamond-lane" traffic
  • Cross Layer Optimization must be capable of spanning all OSI network layers: from physical to application
  • Deployed throughout the Internet, not just at the traditional edges
  • Deliberate organic rollout, sparse-to-dense
  • Springboard for accelerating Media Grid adoption
  • Enable linear predictability for video streaming

Media Grid Design Principles:

“Dumb” Stateless Network or Grid
“Smart” Stateful Endpoints -- Sources & Destinations
Network Nodes:
*Keep only local State, not Global
*Forward & Mediate only on a per-packet basis
Stateless Mediation Controller (with “AQM Mustang”) relays metric values dynamically to neighbors
Changes in Metrics cause label re-assignments creating a “dynamic” media grid
Path Metrics, themselves, are of core value to entire grid
Grid Toll System fee paid for use of metric information to Media Grid Operator
